What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a way of creating a relaxed focus. It can create that feeling of being in a trance. Trance is a very natural state and easy to go into. Each day you might go into trance many times. Just like that feeling you get when you lose yourself in a good movie or book, or if you are driving somewhere and you get there without being consciously aware of driving. That is trance. Trance is a wonderful state because it allows your conscious and your unconscious minds to work together better. You are relaxed and in that feeling of easy flow.

Hypnosis in a clinical situation is very different from what you might imagine, or have seen in a hypnosis stage show, there are no people dancing like chickens for a start! At no stage do you ‘go under’ and never are you out of control. All hypnosis is self hypnosis, that means that when you are getting hypnotised, it is your choice to follow the instructions of the hypnotist telling you to relax. Who relaxes your muscles? You do, when you decide to. The hypnotist only coaxes that feeling out of you with certain words, phrases and relaxing tone of voice.

What most people don’t realise about hypnosis is that during a session you are always consciously aware of what is going on, you just have a very pleasant feeling of relaxation.

During hypnosis, or any form of alternative therapy, the goal is always for the client to find their own learnings or inner wisdom, so that they can begin to trust themselves more and can realise that they have all the resources they need to succeed. Hypnosis helps this process to occur easily because it stops the conscious programming getting in the way and allows the person to trust in their own wisdom. This can help to release old emotions, fears or negative beliefs. The changes that are made during hypnosis are lasting because it goes to the deepest level of the mind.
